DCHS Class of '64 celebrates 40th reunion by Dianne Gum Members of the Dodge City High School Class of 1964 gathered for their 40th reunion in Dodge City July 2-4. 81 classmates, 34 spouses/sidekicks, 15 children/grandchildren/parents, and 5 former teachers joined in all or part of the celebration. Special Awards & Recognition were given to: Pat Berger for traveling the greatest distance to the reunion-2800 miles from the Virgin Islands; Jim Smith for first to register; Judy Higley Blackburn for most grandchildren; Tandy Steele Kornechuk for longest married; Robert Karr for first to retire; Ron Cromwell for having changed the most; Tandy Steele Kornechuk for having changed the least; Fred Stewart for having the same job for the longest time; Willis Gordon & Gordon Hagler for owning the oldest cars. Classmate married couples attending the reunion were Clyde & Nancy Council Goff, Warren & Alexis Romine Wallis, Randy & Sharon Smith Class, Lonnie & Sally Ludvickson Roberts, Drennon & Patty Gilbert Hawkins, Robert & Vicki Gillett Karr, Jeff & Tana Reynolds Wynn. Kansas Rep. Jan Henry Scoggins-Waite presented a Kansas desk flag to Pat Berger to travel back to his veterinary clinic in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Author Loretta Hood Hall presented copies of her book Underground Buildings - More than meets the eye to classmates who had lived the longest time in one home. Some attendees enjoyed Great Golf Games at the Country Club and Mariah Hills organized by Ed Schriner and his assistant John Perrier. Classmates enjoyed a Scavenger Search of Dodge City where they found and photographed various places that were former sites for education and recreation between 1951 & 1964. The event was planned by Sharon Allen Salmans and Beryl "Bebo" Lowery Born. Comanche Intermediate School Principal Diane Briollett gave the class a tour of their former high school building and explained the current education program. Comments to tour organizers Mr. Frank Evans, former math teacher and coach, and Classmate Maureen Johnson Flax were "What happened to the lockers?" Phyllis Winter Madden organized a Country Club Luncheon, and Gary & Joann Roth organized an evening meal at the Cowtown Club. Drennon & Patty Gilbert Hawkins arranged the "Frugal Feast" at the Sheridan Activity Center where parents and faculty members were guests of the class. Former Dodge City Public Schools faculty members who visited with the class were Frank Evans, Bob Preston, Imogene Hafner, Russel Lupton, Irene Thompson, and Janie Gregg. Rod Faulds organized Marvelous Memorabilia where photographs, scrapbooks, and even clothing apparel such as drill team boots and jackets created opportunities for all attending to reflect back on school and community events. Stars that decorated the class's Senior Homecoming Float 40 years ago served as decorations in the memorabilia area (thanks to their preservation by Mrs. Grace Winter.) The Sunday Morning Heavenly Help Hour was organized by Rev. Clyde Goff who was assisted by Missionaries Darrel McMillen and Steve Sparrow and Musicians Gary Roth and Jay & Wilma Davis Barbian. Each Classmate received a handmade "goodie bag" with the Red Demon Logo and Class reunion information embroidered by Warren & Alexis Romine Wallis. The goodie contents were contributed by several classmates, the Dodge City Visitor's Bureau, and the Kansas Tourism Board. Large signs containing the Dodge High School Fight Song as well as the Weekend agenda were made by Clyde & Nancy Council Goff. The Classmate Message Boards displaying photos and messages from classmates who were unable to attend were organized by Daryl Hopkins. Each classmate received a Classmate Connections book containing information about the 248 people who had been members of the Class of '64 during their high school days. The book was compiled and published by Dianne Gum. Many agreed that the Dodge City Fireworks were a fitting finale for a fabulous 40th reunion.
